Serene Escape: Transforming a Property with a Modular Retreat

Oshawa residents Mark Fuller and his wife Lorraine, a CPA with over 20 years in municipal service, recently embarked on a journey to find a peaceful retreat in nature. Mark, an account manager for a manufacturing company, shared insights into their search and the eventual discovery of The Bunkie Co., a choice that transformed their property.

“We purchased the property and cabin for a natural setting getaway,” Mark explained. “We first encountered The Bunkie Co. at the Cottage Life Show years ago and were immediately drawn to their design.”

Their quest for a cost-effective solution led them to consider a Bunkie because, “The price of building a cottage is prohibitive. The Bunkie didn’t require a permit, we loved the design, and it fit perfectly in the space we had” Mark said.

The transformation was significant. “Our old cabin was suitable for winter, but summer brought more wildlife inside than outside. Before the Bunkie, we mostly tented in the summer,” Mark reminisced. “Now, with a Bunkie and a Murphy bed, waking up to floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the beautiful surroundings is fantastic. The Bunkie also has lighting and electrical outlets powered by a chargeable generator.”

The process of acquiring their Bunkie, however, was not without challenges. “We built right after COVID, facing delays with manufacturers. But we weren’t in a hurry, and the builder Evan recommended was excellent. He lived on-site and constructed the Bunkie off-grid,” Mark recounted.

For those considering a Bunkie, Mark emphasized the importance of communication. “I can’t speak to the build itself as our contractor handled everything, but good communication is key,” he advised. “I would also say, be mindful of what your real needs are. We installed a Dickinson Marine propane stove, but the next size up would have been better for winter heating.”

Mark and Lorraine’s experience with The Bunkie Co. has been overwhelmingly positive. “The Bunkie has truly enhanced our enjoyment of the property, providing an ideal balance of comfort and connection with nature,” Mark concluded.
